Jay Kleberg, an Austin-based conservationist whose family owns the sprawling King Ranch in Kingsville, said in an interview with The Texas Tribune on Wednesday that his campaign will focus on fighting climate change, managing the state's disaster recovery and improving benefits for veterans.

For generations now, the Kleberg family—namesake of Kleberg County, Tex. —has owned King Ranch. Cattle rancher Richard King and wife Henrietta founded the ranch, according to a 1980 Texas Monthly article, and when the latter died in 1925, her heirs split up the ranch's 1.2 million acres.

King Ranch is the largest ranch in the United States. At some 825,000 acres (3,340 km²; 1,289 sq mi) it is larger than both the land area of Rhode Island and the area of the European country Luxembourg.

Today's King Ranch is a major agribusiness with interests in cattle ranching, farming (citrus, cotton, grain, sugar cane, and turfgrass), luxury retail goods, and recreational hunting.

Already expert stockmen and horsemen, these resilient denizens of the rugged Mexican range became known as Los Kineños – the King's people. They and many generations of their descendants would go on to weave a large portion of the historical tapestry of King Ranch.

Although no one officially lives in the house today, it remains as a gathering place for descendants and a reminder of the rich history of King Ranch. The house is closed to the public but can be seen from the outside on the Daily Historical Tours.

In May 2021, a buyer group represented by screenwriter Taylor Sheridan purchased the ranch. Paintings depicting portions of the ranch have been painted by Tom Ryan and Mondel Rogers. A barn from the ranch has been moved to the National Ranching Heritage Center in Lubbock, Texas.
